In the Guamuhaya Mountains of central Cuba, the Vegas Grandes Georoute invites visitors to explore a landscape where rock and water reveal the ancient history of the Earth. Nature, adventure and knowledge converge along a trail that showcases the geological richness and biodiversity of this mountainous environment.
The route features two primary geosites—the Grotto (Gruta) and the Vegas Grandes Waterfall (Salto Vegas Grandes)—both of which highlight the transformative power of water and the unique nature of the local rock formations.
Inside the grotto, dark marble creates a visually striking atmosphere. Over thousands of years, the persistent action of water has sculpted stalactites and mineral deposits—a natural process that offers insight into the evolution of the subterranean landscape.
The trail continues to the Vegas Grandes Waterfall, an impressive cascade plunging approximately 80 meters down a massive gray marble cliff. The sound of the water, the cool air, and the lush vegetation surrounding the falls make this spot one of the most memorable highlights of the excursion.
Throughout the hike, visitors are accompanied by diverse flora and fauna, while travertine blocks along the riverbank add further geological interest. Every section of the path provides opportunities to observe, photograph, and learn about the natural processes that have shaped this terrain. The Vegas Grandes Georoute is perfect for those who enjoy hiking, nature photography, and outdoor adventure. It also offers a chance to engage with Cuba’s geological heritage and discover how water, time, and environmental conditions have combined to create landscapes of extraordinary
