Hidden within the Guamuhaya National Geopark in central Cuba—near the Topes de Collantes tourist complex—lies one of the country’s most stunning landscapes: Salto del Caburní. This majestic waterfall invites visitors to discover the island’s natural wealth as they trek trails and forests, leading to pools of crystal-clear water.

Located in the province of Sancti Spíritus, this natural attraction is about 15 kilometers from Trinidad, a colonial city that serves as a key base for exploring the region.

The adventure begins with a hike of approximately 45 minutes along a descending trail, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. Along the way, visitors can admire a diverse array of plants and listen to the songs of birds that inhabit these evergreen forests.

The trek culminates at a spectacular waterfall, which plunges roughly 64 meters down through a narrow limestone gorge, forming natural pools perfect for enjoying the surroundings. As the Caburní River cascades between the rocky walls, it creates a white curtain of water reminiscent of a horse’s tail.

The color of the water shifts based on natural conditions: at times it takes on greenish hues, while after rainfall, it may turn brown due to the sediment carried along by the flow. Such rain can also make the trail more difficult to navigate, so it is advisable to wear appropriate footwear and follow the advice of guides.

Biodiversity is another major highlight of the journey. Amidst the tropical vegetation, one can spot iconic Cuban birds, such as the Cuban trogon, hummingbird, tody, and various species of parrots, alongside a wide array of plants native to mountainous ecosystems.

The return journey follows the same path, this time on an ascent, which requires a good level of physical fitness and sufficient time to complete the excursion.

With its combination of mountains, crystal-clear waters, forests, and native wildlife, this corner of Topes de Collantes offers a memorable experience for those looking to discover the island beyond its beaches.

A natural treasure that reveals, with every step, the extraordinary landscape diversity of Cuba.
