Authorities from the Cuban Ministry of Tourism, led by Minister Juan Carlos García Granda, met with the University of Havana’s Faculty of Tourism, as part of a strategy to strengthen ties with academia.

According to a post on the ministry’s social media, meetings of this kind will be held “monthly to strengthen relations and share experiences.”

At this first meeting, which was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Yamily Aldama, and executives from the main business groups in the sector, first-year students learned firsthand about industry work systems, confirming the shared interest in bringing professional practice closer to academic training.

“With commitment and vision, we continue building together the path toward a more robust and prepared tourism sector,” the ministry’s post states.

In Cuba, the Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism prepares professionals to work in advertising and travel agencies, tour operators, tourist information offices, accommodations, food, passenger transport, car rental, leisure entities, trade and logistics of products, as well as tourism consulting and research.

Highly trained professionals from academia

Bridging the gap between theoretical aspects of academic training and the operational realities of the tourism sector has always been a constant objective on the island. This facilitates students’ understanding of the processes, challenges, and current trends in the leisure industry, thus preparing more competent workers.

Furthermore, this strengthening of ties facilitates the creation of a permanent channel for communication and updates, ensuring that educational strategies respond to the real needs of the market, including new technologies, regulations, and dynamics.

In addition, firsthand knowledge of work systems encourages students to align themselves with the diverse areas of tourism, expanding their skills and future opportunities for successful employment.
