The fascination with Cuba transcends borders, and on this occasion, we bring you the experiences of a family from Finland, a beautiful country in Northern Europe, bordering Sweden, Norway and Russia, and located about 8,400 kilometers from the Caribbean island.

Beyond stereotypes, every corner of Cuba is authentic, as confirmed by Pirkko Myyry, who, along with two teenagers, experienced an unforgettable adventure in the largest island of the Antilles.

Without knowing exactly what to expect, Pirkko and her family enjoyed a trip that exceeded all their expectations. Although they acknowledge the difficulties Cubans are currently facing, their experience was exceptional and included everything from staying in charming private homes to enjoying the delicious local cuisine.

“We’ve stayed in the most beautiful houses in Viñales, Havana, and now Varadero. We’ve tried street food, dined in restaurants, and enjoyed home-cooked meals… and it’s all been incredible!” stressed Pirkko.

She also pointed out that, compared to Europe, food prices aren’t high, which allowed the family to support the private sector and be generous with their tips, something highly appreciated by the locals.

Pirkko and her family noted they didn’t face any problems with transportation between cities, and that prices were reasonable. However, beyond the logistics, what impressed them most was the warmth of the people: “We’ve met amazing people, and we truly encourage everyone to visit Cuba,” she noted.

Ideas to experience Cuba like the Myyry family

Some special places to visit in different Cuban provinces as discovered by this Finnish family are:

Viñales: Nature and authenticity

Viñales is a town in western Cuba. Its streets are lined with colorful wooden houses dating from the colonial era, including the Municipal Museum, which explores the region’s history. The valley’s tall, steep limestone hills, known as mogotes, attract climbers.

A visit to the Mural of Prehistory is an excellent way to experience the art of the people of Viñales.

Havana: History and movement

Havana is the capital of Cuba. The Spanish colonial architecture in the heart of Old Havana dates back to the 16th century, and visiting it is like stepping back in time. The best experiences come from visiting the Castillo de la Fuerza Real, a fort and maritime museum.

Another site to visit is the National Capitol Building, an iconic 1920s monument, as well as the city’s baroque Cathedral and its Plaza Vieja, whose buildings reflect the dynamic mixture of architectural styles.

Varadero: Sunshine and dream-like beaches

Varadero, which encompasses Cuba’s narrow Hicacos Peninsula, is a very popular beach resort town. Beautiful all-inclusive hotels and spa resorts stretch along its 20km Atlantic coastline, well as a golf course.

Among its attractions are Josone Park, ideal for enjoying a relaxing day out with the family; the stunning Xanadu Mansion, an elegant building with incredible rooftop views, which is now also a restaurant and hotel; the Bellamar Caves, considered one of Cuba’s greatest natural treasures; and Saturno Cave with its amazing interior lagoon.
