Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport received the first flight of the 2025-2026 season from Halifax, Canada, marking the start of the winter tourist season. With 163 passengers on board, the WestJet aircraft arrived promptly at 8:40 p.m.
This direct route, which will operate weekly on Fridays, is part of WestJet’s strategy to consolidate its leadership in the Canadian market for Cuba.
Upon arrival, the tourists were greeted by representatives of the Gaviota Tourism Group, who welcomed them with traditional music, dance, and a complimentary cocktail, as a symbol of Cuban hospitality. The company, which caters primarily to the Canadian market, offered visitors information about its services and tour packages, designed to maximize their experience in the destination.
Speaking to the press, one of the passengers said this was his third time in Cuba. “I’ve been here to see the place, and it’s absolutely beautiful. You guys are all as kind as can be,” he remarked.
Another young man added that this was his fifth visit to the island: “I love it here, the people are awesome, the place is amazing, it’s so warm I can wear my t-shirt. It’s awesome, I love it here. Cuban people are amazing, super friendly, they’re super amazing, they’re always so nice to talk to.”
The resumption of this seasonal route strengthens tourism ties between Canada and Cuba, contributing to the revitalization of the sector during the high season. Canada is the main source of tourists to the island and this connection is expected to further boost visitor arrivals in the coming months.
