Big Game Trolling Tournament begins today in Jardines del Rey

Jardines del Rey once again becomes the epicenter of sport fishing with the start of the 12th International Big Game Trolling Tournament. The event, which will take place from October 14 to 19, brings together anglers of various nationalities in a natural setting of extraordinary beauty and biodiversity.
Participants, both amateur and professional, will have the opportunity to challenge the crystalline waters of the northern Coco and Guillermo keys, where species such as marlin, dorado, and sailfish are believed to be abundant. The catch-and-release format, which characterizes this tournament, reflects the organizers’ commitment to marine conservation.
The tournament, organized by the Cuban Ministry of Tourism and the Marlin Nautical and Marinas Company, not only promotes fishing as a recreational activity but is also part of a broader strategy to diversify the country’s tourism offers. This competition will attract competitors and enthusiasts in a spirit of camaraderie and respect for nature, highlighting the richness of Cuba’s marine ecosystems.
A major event
Participants will compete in an area up to five miles north-northeast of the keys, where various pelagic species can be found. October is particularly favorable for fishing for marlin, as well as other species such as swordfish, known for its speed, and tuna, which is also popular among anglers.
Those wishing to participate are advised to wear light clothing, sunglasses, and carry plenty of water, as well as enjoy the experience with a camera to capture the memorable moments this tournament offers.
Fishing seasons in Jardines del Rey
The tournament also coincides with different fishing seasons, increasing anglers’ chances of success. Among the most sought-after species are:
Atlantic blue marlin: July to September on the northwestern shelf.
Emperor: late February to early April.
Wahoo: late October to early December.
Marlin: late May to early July.
Sierra and kingfish: in July, mainly on the northwestern shelf.
Bonito, albacore, and yellowfin tuna: available year-round, especially in spring.
