Agrotourism in Viñales offers a genuine experience, connecting travelers with nature, culture, and local cuisine. This destination, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and agricultural wealth, has incorporated this form of tourism in recent years as a sustainable way to discover the island.

Cuba, with its vast arable land and privileged climate, is increasingly promoting sustainable agriculture. The agroecological farms in Viñales, considered one of Cuba’s most beautiful landscapes, serve as productive alternatives that integrate ecotourism, sharing ecological methods and natural products with visitors.

On these farms, the essence of the land comes to life through orchards, ancestral techniques, and dishes prepared with fresh, organic ingredients.

Two farms worth a visit

El Paraíso stands out as one of the most iconic places to experience agrotourism in Viñales. After a horseback ride through the tobacco fields, offering a close encounter with local farmers, visitors enjoy a unique cocktail known as “the anti-stress.”

This space combines a simple wooden restaurant with panoramic views of the valley and terraces overflowing with vegetables and herbs grown on the property. Its culinary offerings include traditional Cuban dishes prepared with tubers and spices from the farm, making it a perfect getaway for couples or those seeking to admire one of the country’s most spectacular sunsets.

The Facebook page reads: “At Finca El Paraíso, every bite tells a story of love for the land and dedication to the future. Here, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a way of life. We work the land with respect, caring for every corner of our farm so you can enjoy healthy, flavorful food.”

Elsewhere in the valley, the El Olivo farm surprises visitors with its biodiversity and diverse production. The surrounding limestone hills (mogotes) provide an unparalleled natural setting for savoring artisanal cheeses, goat’s milk, local meat products, and other delicacies. Its restaurant, located in the heart of town, offers traditional cuisine that reflects the quality of its products.

Learning about agroecological practices is combined with adventure activities such as hiking, climbing, caving, and rappelling on an imposing limestone hill—a perfect blend of adrenaline and connection with nature.

Agrotourism in the Viñales area perfectly complements the sustainable tourism practices and adventure activities that characterize this region. Visiting these farms enriches one’s knowledge of organic farming and local gastronomy, and allows for unforgettable moments in a privileged natural environment.

History of agrotourism in Viñales

The research project “Agrotourism: Beginnings in the Viñales Valley,” by Martin H. Luis, Julia R. Mesa and Noemí Martínez, delves into the origins of this type of rural tourism in this region of Cuba. Agrotourism offers visitors the opportunity for direct interaction with nature, the physical and human environment of the rural area, and its traditions and culture, through typical agricultural activities.

In 2013, Viñales joined the Local Agricultural Innovation Program (PIAL), implemented in several provinces and municipalities across the country. This program promotes the development of local initiatives that provide benefits and generate income for families.

In 2014, two farms became pioneers in this activity in the region, offering cabins adapted for tourists while maintaining a rural feel, and providing quality food services.

For the research, Luis Acosta and Martha García, owners of La Campiña farm, shared their experiences and the facilities they offer: a rustic cabin for lodging, a private restaurant serving products grown on the farm itself, and a birdwatcher. Their specialty is raising rabbits and growing bananas.

Marlén Cordero, owner of El Paraíso farm, also shared her experience, highlighting the presence of a small dam for feeding fish as one of its most distinctive features.

Currently, agrotourism in Viñales complements the sustainable tourism practices and adventure activities that characterize this region. Visits to the farms promote the ethical, efficient, and ecological development of agriculture and boost the local economy, demonstrating Cuba’s commitment to a travel model that respects the planet.
