The comprehensive renovation of Santiago de Cuba’s Antonio Maceo Grajales International Airport will take place between 2026 and 2027, during which time it will continue to operate.

Cuban Minister of Transportation Eduardo Rodríguez Ávila stated on social media that measures will be taken to avoid inconvenience to passengers while the work is being carried out, which will double the current capacity of this gateway to eastern Cuba.

The main objective is to enhance the comfort of the lounges and improve the quality of services offered to passengers, airlines and the general public.

Therefore, “The scope of the renovation includes a comprehensive reconfiguration of the spaces. The ground floor will house the arrivals halls for both international and domestic passengers, with independent flows, thus streamlining the baggage reception and delivery processes.

“The upper floor will be entirely dedicated to the Departures Hall, which will be accessed via escalators and elevators, ensuring universal accessibility, especially for people with reduced mobility,” the minister stated.

The project also includes the installation of new baggage carousels, the installation of modern immigration control booths, and the updating of the air conditioning system.

This expansion and modernization are fundamental steps to position Santiago de Cuba’s airport as an essential gateway for the development of Santiago and the entire eastern region, both for international flights and domestic connections, thus offering greater efficiency and comfort to all users, the minister concluded.

Construction work began on September 3, 1951, and the airport began operations in 1954 with four initial aircraft. Its first expansion and remodeling took place in 1991.

It has two runways, a main one measuring 4,002m and a second measuring 1,400m, equipped to handle any type of aircraft.
