September in Cuba: Traditions, nature and travel itineries

September arrives in Cuba with rains that restore the landscape’s intense greenery, centuries-old traditions, and a varied calendar of events. It’s a month to discover Cuba at a leisurely pace, with the tropics as a backdrop and Cuban hospitality, as always, waiting for travelers.

Nature in September

The fields of Viñales, the Valle de los Ingenios in Trinidad, and the mountains of Baracoa are especially beautiful after the downpours. It’s an ideal month for lovers of photography and nature tourism.

Along the coast, sea turtles continue their nesting season, especially on the Guanahacabibes Peninsula and in Cayo Largo del Sur.

Cuban beaches are an oasis of tranquility. Varadero, the “Blue Beach,” offers sunshine and warm waters during the busiest hours of the day. Ancón Beach and Cayo Coco are ideal choices for those seeking beauty and calm.

Culture and tradition

September 1 is a historic date in Cuba, marking the start of a new school year. On this day, children and young people in their new uniforms head to their schools throughout the country.

September is also a month with deep religious and cultural roots, featuring two festivals that blend Catholicism and Afro-Cuban religions in a unique expression of religious syncretism.

On the 7, the Virgin of Regla, Patroness and Protector of Havana Bay, is celebrated at the National Shrine of Regla in the Cuban capital. This Catholic festival is syncretized with Yemayá, an orisha associated with the sea in the Yoruba religion.

The following day, September 8, Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, the patron saint of Cuba—proclaimed as such by Pope Benedict XV in 1916 at the request of veterans of the War of Independence—is venerated. Popularly known as Cachita or the Virgin Mambisa, she is associated with Oshún in Afro-Cuban tradition. Her shrine, in El Cobre, Santiago de Cuba, welcomes numerous pilgrims and visitors every year.

Weather

September is a hot and humid month. Mornings are usually clear, while afternoons tend to become cloudy, especially in the western region.

It is considered an active month within the Atlantic hurricane season (June through November). However, Cuba has one of the most efficient civil protection systems in the world and a well-regarded early warning system. Hotels and resorts have protocols and contingency plans in place.
