Playa El Coral: A hidden gem near Varadero

Among the wonders Cuba has to offer, Playa El Coral stands out as a place that combines the serenity of the sea with breathtaking natural landscapes.

This coral reef is located halfway between Matanzas and Varadero, near a protected area that ensures a pristine ecosystem and exceptional marine biodiversity. It is ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving, as it is home to a vast number of underwater species such as sponges, tropical fish of various colors, and a wide variety of crustaceans.

A reef like few others

“Playa El Coral, located at kilometer 14 on the old road from Matanzas to Varadero, within the Laguna de Maya Wildlife Reserve, is one of the places where Cubans place their hopes for the future of coral reefs. There, we had the privilege of being hosted and guided by Alfredo Contreras and Luis Muiño, two of Cuba’s most qualified and experienced divers, instructors to several generations of divers, excellent underwater photographers, environmentalists, friends and colleagues.”

“We were also accompanied by Julio Cesar Peña Morales, deputy director of the RVS Faro de Maya. The El Coral reef is in excellent health, and thanks to the efforts and expertise of Muiño and his team, it stands as Cuba’s prime example of artificial coral reproduction and restoration, having completely repopulated a large reef head with staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis). Other corals, gorgonians, sponges, and their accompanying flora and fauna are also in very good health. Thank you, friends, for sharing such a beautiful setting.”

Travelers also share their impressions on Tripadvisor: “The dive instructors are very attentive and keep a close eye on the group at all times. They first gave us a lesson on the diving experience, and then we went on a dive. Everything was very safe and beautiful. Lots of corals and fish of different colors. It’s an experience you shouldn’t miss!” recommends a user identified as Orange House reizen Varadero.

The fish gather around, accustomed to being fed, and the experience allows for direct interaction with nature. The best time to visit Playa El Coral is from November through April, when weather conditions are most pleasant and rainfall is minimal.
