The project to transform Varadero into a Smart Tourism Destination (STD) continues. This was announced by authorities from the Matanzas Science and Technology Park (PCTM), one of the entities implementing the project, on social media.

“The Varadero STD project working group met to continue promoting development, even in the current complex context. The objective: to meet the goals set for the Tourism Fair (May 2026) and continue moving forward. Because development doesn’t wait. We continue working to digitally transform the country’s main sun and beach destination,” the post read.

According to the statement, which was also reported by the newspaper Trabajadores, the delegate of the Ministry of Tourism in Matanzas, Luis Martínez de Armas, and Diego Vladimir Castilla Cabrera, president of the PCTM (Community of Tourism Projects of Matanzas), led a meeting to review 28 sub-projects derived from the main one.

In an exclusive interview with Trabajadores, Castilla Cabrera announced that this work was being carried out in accordance with a methodology developed in collaboration with the Spanish Society for the Management of Innovation and Tourism Technologies (Segittur), which holds permits granted by the European Union to certify this type of smart destination. “This gives Varadero added value,” he stated.

“We want to meet 20 percent of the indicators. This would give us first-class status,” he commented. He further specified that 18 projects in the development phase are being carried out by the Electronics for Tourism Group (GET), among which the creation of the Smart Tourism Destination (STD) office stands out. This office will be dedicated full-time to monitoring, tracking and controlling the operation of tourism processes and their indicators, based on data analysis.

The Gaviota Tourism Group recently announced that it had begun the diagnostic process for Cayo Santa María as a Smart Tourism Destination, managed by Segittur.

The Smart Tourism Office is already operational in this tourist area. This tool for the comprehensive management of services, both customer-oriented and support services (water, electricity, fuel, roads, etc.), allows for real-time monitoring of the infrastructure’s status and enables appropriate action, facilitating efficient and sustainable resource management and an improved customer experience.
