Cayo Largo del Sur, a paradisiacal Cuban key, received its first flight of the season from Toronto on January 20, with 171 passengers on board.
The route, operated by WestJet, will run weekly (on Tuesdays) until March 24.
Cayo Largo del Sur is the main tourist destination of the Isle of Youth, in the southwestern region of Cuba. Its beautiful white sand beaches, abundant marine life, and deep channels surrounded by coral reefs have made this site a landmark in the Caribbean.
WestJet announced the expansion of flights to Cuba for the 2025-2026 winter season. As part of implementing that decision, two weekly flights began operating between Toronto and Havana’s José Martí International Airport on December 18, with service continuing until April 23, 2026. Capacity was also increased on routes to Varadero, Cayo Coco and Santa Clara.
On social media, Sunwing Vacations shared good news about the destination with its travelers today, posting a statement from the Cuban Ministry of Tourism indicating that tourism activity continues without interruption. The main accommodations are operating with backup generators or renewable energy sources, the statement reports.
Regarding seasonal illnesses (dengue, chikungunya, and oropharyngeal fever), there is a downward trend in cases as control efforts intensify.
Cuban tourism authorities expect to recover the arrival number of one million Canadian visitors this year, a figure typical before 2019.
