Havana’s Hotel Inglaterra celebrated its 150th anniversary with a moving gala that brought together staff, tour operators, authorities and cultural figures to write a new chapter in its history.
Cuban Minister of Tourism, Juan Carlos García Granda, who attended the event, congratulated the hotel’s staff and emphasized that, since its founding in 1875, the hotel has been a privileged witness to national history and a symbol of elegance in the heart of Havana.
He stressed that its architecture and dedication to service make it an icon and a “source of pride for all of us who love this city.” He also expressed his certainty that it will continue to be a bastion of our tourism and cultural identity.
Meanwhile, Jesús Pérez Barza, president of the Gran Caribe Hotel Group, emphasized that the hotel is not just a building, but a space that is inhabited, listened to, and appreciated. He recalled that part of Cuban history, culture and politics has been written within its walls, bearing the marks of figures such as National Hero José Martí and Chilean writer Gabriela Mistral.
He noted that this anniversary is also a look toward the future, as the hotel reaches its 150th year in a dynamic state, with work undertaken to restore its authenticity and showcase it as a bridge between tradition and modernity.
Mohamad Fawzi, director of Blue Diamonds Resorts, the chain that has managed the property since 2022, expressed his gratitude during the gala for the talent, effort and passion of the entire staff. He revealed that preparations for this anniversary began over a year and a half ago and emphasized that this is the oldest operating hotel in the country.
Declared a National Monument in 1981, the Hotel Inglaterra is a witness to the city, a cultural landmark, and a home for those who have made hospitality their vocation. The event, which was also attended by the Minister of Culture, Alpidio Alonso, highlighted the values of resilience, art, and Cuban identity that are embodied within the building’s walls.
