The inaugural flight of the Canadian airline WestJet from Toronto arrived this afternoon at Havana’s José Martí International Airport with 173 passengers. This operation officially inaugurates a new direct air route between Canada and Cuba.

The connection, with two weekly flights on Thursdays and Sundays, represents a milestone in connectivity between the two countries and opens new opportunities for the Cuban tourism sector by facilitating the arrival of visitors from one of its main source markets.

The Canadian Ambassador to Cuba, Ms. Marianick Tremblay, expressed her delight at seeing this flight arrive. “This year we are celebrating 80 years of bilateral relations, and we know that Canada is one of, if not the most important country for tourism here in Cuba. I am delighted with this opportunity to take a direct flight here to Havana because, in addition to the beaches, Havana is a beautiful place that everyone should visit.”

In an official statement, WestJet highlighted that the route re-establishes an essential link and promises direct access to one of the most iconic capitals in the Caribbean. The airline expects to attract a wide variety of travelers: tourists, business professionals, academics and students, to foster cultural, sporting and scientific exchanges.

Havana is a destination that truly inspires, and we’re thrilled to make it even more accessible for Canadians,” stated Mike Perkins, WestJet’s senior manager of Airport Affairs. “This route reflects our commitment to offering more opportunities for Canadians to discover unique destinations, whether they’re seeking cultural experiences, historic charm or simply a cold-weather escape in the Caribbean. Our twice-weekly service between Toronto and Havana gives guests flexibility to create the getaway that’s right for them.”

The flights are operated aboard Boeing 737-800 aircraft, equipped to meet the growing demand during the peak winter season. The flight days have been chosen based on the most frequent travel patterns among tourists, ensuring efficient scheduling.

The Cuban Ministry of Tourism celebrated the initiative as a key step in the sector’s recovery. “The route opens new opportunities to enjoy the culture, hospitality and warmth that characterize Cuba,” representatives stated.

Tickets are available through WestJet Vacations, Hola Sun, The Special Travel, and on the official website: westjet.com.
