Engineers from the Center for Energy Information Management and Development (Cubaenergía) and the Higher Institute of Technologies and Applied Sciences (Instec) participated in the installation of automated electricity consumption measurement systems in Varadero and Jardines del Rey.
These systems, operational since July, are the result of the implementation in these two tourist destinations of the Cuba International Sustainable Tourism Project, financed by the Global Environment Facility and the Cuban government. The project aims to improve the energy efficiency of 13 facilities belonging to the Cubanacán and Gran Caribe hotel chains, according to a report by the Cuban News Agency. The new technology will provide real-time information, facilitating decision-making, particularly regarding the responsible use of electricity, especially by monitoring areas of highest demand within these accommodation establishments. It also offers the possibility of tracking and comparing consumption over varying time periods.
The ongoing project also includes the installation of solar panel systems to generate electricity and solar water heaters; training for tourism sector workers; and the preparation of documentation for the future implementation of NC ISO-50001:2019 “Energy Management Systems – Requirements with Guidance for Use.”
It also involves the establishment of automatic weather stations to monitor meteorological variables and the use of data in developing models to assess the influence of climate on energy consumption.
