Weather in Cuba: Hurricane Melissa approaches

Tourism sector takes precautions in eastern Cuba

For the past 12 hours, Hurricane Melissa has continued to gain slightly in intensity. It is moving westward at a speed of seven kilometers per hour, and over the next 24 hours, this system will continue its slow westward movement in the seas south of Jamaica.

The hurricane is then forecast to gradually incline its path north and northeast, passing very close to or over Jamaica, approaching Cuban territory on Tuesday in the seas south of eastern Cuba.

The outer bands of this hurricane will continue to increase cloudiness and rainfall in eastern Cuba, which could become heavy in some locations, mainly in mountainous areas.

Holguín, Las Tunas, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo

Strong swells will continue in the seas south of the provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba, with light flooding in low-lying areas along this coast.

The Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology is closely monitoring the evolution and future path of this intense hurricane.

In the provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Las Tunas, 258,579 and 72,000 people will be protected, respectively. In addition, 110,000 residents will be evacuated in Granma, 69,000 in Holguín, and 139,914 in Guantánamo.

Approximately 7% of the Cuban population is on alert for Melissa, according to official information.

Havana

Temperatures: Between 24°C and 30°C
Conditions: Mostly sunny weather with scattered clouds is expected. The chance of rain is low.

Varadero

Temperatures: Between 23°C and 29°C
Conditions: Varadero, known for its white sand beaches, will have warm and sunny weather.

Trinidad

Temperatures: Between 22°C and 28°C
Conditions: Trinidad will enjoy pleasant weather, with mostly clear skies.
